Out with the Old, In with the New: Trends for 2013

As we near the end of the year, we'd like to take a look back at some of 2012's hot wedding trends and give you a preview of things we'd like to see hot for 2013.Let's start off with things that we think should be bypassed in 2013...

  • Chair sashes and chair covers
  • Mason Jars
  • Candy Bars
  • Photo Booths

Here at Design Loves Detail, we thrive on fresh ideas and good design. That being said, we'd never suggest taking the aforementioned fan-favorites out of your 2013 wedding visions, without replacing them with some fresh & fabulous ideas.

  • Instead of trying to dress up a lack luster plastic chair, we'd love to see you use a statement chair like the chiavari or the lucite chair. Both of these options need no adornment and can stand on their own.
  • Another great option is adding natural elements like floral swags or simple ribbon adorments.

Gone are the days of "vintage" and with them, out goes mason jars. Weddings are moving towards a more modern feel with bold patterns and color. Some great alternatives to the mason jar centerpieces include:

  • Colored glass
  • Metallic vases
  • Vessels with clean lines and modern shapes

Candy bars have swept the wedding industry like a storm but lets be honest, once you've seen one, you've seen them all. They started out as a unique and interactive favor for your guests but have quickly fizzled into repetitive monotony. We know that they are a great economical option for weddings however, we want to show you alternative that can make a statement and leave your guests with a lasting impression. Great options like...

  • Succulent plants. These can also double as seating chart assignments.
  • Anything personalized. We love the idea of coffee beans with charming verbiage like "Love is Brewing"
  • Keep in mind that your favors should tie into your wedding and reflect the bride and groom
  • Eco-friendly options like seeds, flowers and plants
  • Edibles are always a hit. Think about incorporating mini pies, cake pops, caramel apples or fresh seasonal berries

Lastly, we discuss alternative options for the photo booth. During this last summer while out on a venue walk-through with one of my brides, a question was posed as to what to do for instead of having a sign-in book. A suggestion arose from a third party about having a photo booth. It was suggested that while the photo booths are so overdone, it was a way for your guests to have something to do. I cringed a little inside at the thought of having an item at your wedding simply because it was the last resort.  I knew then we needed to bring more unique ideas to the Utah wedding industry. Consider these:

  • If youre set on the idea of having a photo of your guests, try having a red carpet instead. With a custom backdrop, guest will feel like celebrities as they walk into your reception.
  • Thumbprint guest books are nothing new but we suggest using a graphic that is sentimental to you.
  • Rocks. Yes, rocks. We love the idea of having your guests sign their names on river rock. After the wedding, the rocks can be placed in a simple dish or vase and used as decor.
  • Custom puzzle in coordinating colors
  • Wishing tree. We love this idea the most. Mini birds are adorned to a tree with your guests signatures. The whole piece can then be framed and hung in our house.
