DIY with DLD: Burlap & Pom-Pom Trees
As promised, here's the tree tutorial I mentioned yesterday! I love these trees, plus they're cheap & easy to make-- a real win in my book. This tutorial covers the step-by-step process for the burlap tree because the pom-pom tree just involves hot-glueing the pom-pom balls onto the cone (figured that didn't need a full tutorial, but let me know if you have any questions!). Also, I got the thick cardboard cones at Michael's craft store for $1.29 each on clearance. They were in the Christmas section. And green burlap is from Hobby Lobby.
- Burlap
- Hot Glue Gun
- Glue Sticks for Glue Gun
- Cardboard Cone
- Scissors
1. Cut the burlap into long strips around 2-3" wide. The length isn't as crucial-- they can be as long as you want, depending on how much gathering (ruffles) you want. If you want lots of ruffles, then cut the strip longer.
2. Use the hot glue gun to place a thin line of glue on the cardboard cone, start about 2 inches up from the bottom of the cone. Then press down at the top part of the burlap strip to adhere the fabric to the cone.
3. As you go around the cone moving from bottom to top, pinch the burlap fabric to get a ruffled look before you press down onto the glue. As you get to the second tier of fabric, make sure the second row covers the top part of the row below it-- that will hide any glue that may have come through the burlap. NOTE: if your fabric strip runs out before you get to the top, that is okay, just begin another fabric strip over the top of the one that just ended.4. Once you reach the top of the cone, cut off any excess fabric and glue the end in place. Now you've got some inexpensive holiday decor with rustic flair! A couple variations I thought of are to use white glitter accents as snow or you could even add pom-pom ornaments! Enjoy.
