Anchors Aweigh: A Modern, Nautical Kid's Room

My little baby isn't much of a baby anymore, which means (dun, dun) a big boy bed had to happen. I don't think of myself as overly sentimental, but it is certainly a mix of emotions to see your baby become a child; like a real kid... what the heck?!! I definitely waited as long as I could-- he pretty much stretched from end to end of his little toddler bed, so I knew I had to let him grow up a bit and move on to a twin bed. But of course, to make it more fun & exciting (for him & me) we got to deck out his room. I wanted something nautical-ish, but not in a traditional way (of course). I don't know why it is, but one of my main criteria with any project is that it needs to be DIFFERENT. Since nautical isn't really that different on it's own, I simply had to put my spin on it...Nautical Boat Kids Room with Modern twist. Love this! This room inspiration all began quite some time ago when I was on my usual Saturday yard sale extravaganza and I came across this vintage handmade boat quilt. I was instantly in love with it, but had absolutely no reason to buy it (other than the fact that I loved it of course). I actually walked all the way across the street without it and got in my car to leave before realizing I really must have it. I am constantly trying to make myself ONLY buy things if I have a place & purpose for them, but this quilt (which cost a whopping $2), just had to break all the rules & come home with me. And I'm sure glad it did.The colors and simple shapes of the quilt just had the perfect elements of modern simplicity and childhood whimsy. I used the colors from the quilt throughout the room-- bold yellow, bright mint/seafoam green, blues, greys and orange-y red. The dresser set is one of my favorite parts of the room, and yet when I'm typing that, I'm thinking of a bunch of other things that are my "favorite part" so I guess I'm a pretty big fan of how it all turned out. But the point I was getting as was that the dressers are a vintage find I picked up for around $100. Plus, they were already painted that perfect shade of yellow-- amazing!!! I love the modern, clean lines they have.Another big score are the red metal shelves. What's so crazy is that I bought the shorter of the two for $5 at a yard sale and had planned to paint it red, on the very same morning that my mother in law had purchased the taller red shelf (which already was red and oddly enough had the same shape to it as the one I found). It was so crazy because I saw it at her house and was like "oh my gosh what is this for?!" and she proceeded to tell me that she had been out on her morning walk, had gone by a yard sale, spotted the red shelf and felt like she should buy it because someone in the family would want it and it was just too cute to leave. So she bought it and carried it all the way home, haha! Yeah, she's that freaking awesome.I found the wood oars at two different yard sales & paid $1 for each (yeaaaahhh!), then I painted them blue. And what do you think about the antique metal bed frame? I wasn't sure how I'd feel, but once in the space, I loved it. I've thought about painting it, but can't decide. I kind of like it's raw, natural look. And of course no kid's room is complete (in my humble opinion) without an authentic vintage toy or two. And my son loves vintage toys probably more than any current ones (just an added bonus, since I really buy them for myself, haha).  Anyway, I don't want to bore you and this post is getting crazy long, so just enjoy these very bright & lovely images perfectly captured by Aria Photography...Colorful & briht kids boat room. Modern nautical. P.S. sorry the last image is from my phone, but I wanted to show that angle too to give a better idea of the room layout.MollieSignature
