Decorating Small Spaces: A Cozy Little Landing.
I have a few little areas of my home that just feel like wasted space. I started thinking about it and realized that really every space SHOULD & CAN have a purpose. One of these areas in my home is the landing area/balcony at the top of my stairs. I actually love this area, but never really spent time there because of the lack of identity for the space. It was just a blank wall (I forgot to take a before picture!). Anyway, I found this little bench for $5 at a yard sale & thought it would be perfect in this small space. I painted it grey and added a couple pillows. I also had canvas prints from a couple summer's ago that I wanted to go here. Even though they don't include my new baby in them, I wanted to document this time in our lives. I decided it would be fun to have different "timeline" areas in my home. I did this by documenting the date the photos were taken in the chevron picture frame. It's now one of my favorite little places. Here are my tips & ideas for helping give a small space some identity & purpose...
- Add a Rug. Rugs can help define an area and give separation. They can also make awkward or strange spaces feel more meaningful.
- Make a Timeline Wall Gallery. I love documenting a certain point in time by highlighting the date the images were taken. If you have a long hallway, you can have a longer timeline!
- Accessorize Boldly. This doesn't necessarily mean with bold colors (although I happen to like them). But use pieces that may be a little larger scale than you might think. Too many little items can make a small space feel cluttered and overwhelming, so keeping things bold & simple will eliminate that cluttered feeling.
- Unify the Design. It's a great idea to pull pops of color from other places in your home so that small spaces like wide hallways, landing areas, lofts or mudrooms can feel like they're a "segway" into other rooms. I used some coral accents in my landing area which was pulled from the nursery space you can see through the open door. Then I also pulled the teal color from the master bedroom, which is on the other side of the landing area. It makes for the perfect little marriage of colors between spaces.
- Add Storage & Function. Who doesn't want more storage space?! I sure do. The bench I found is great because it adds both seating & storage to a place that was otherwise just empty. There are so many great storage furniture pieces out there in the marketplace now that are both beautiful & functional. Even many console tables have drawers or baskets in them, that can be a real asset for storing things out of sight.
