#OneRoomChallenge Week 2: Organization Progress

Playroom shelves! Organization Tips for toysIt's already week 2 of The One Room Challenge! Well, I'm not quite done, but have been working hard this week on organizing everything in the playroom, which also means getting rid of stuff!! My kids want to keep all their toys, like seriously ALL of them... you know what I'm talking about, like the kids meal lame-o toys and plastic snakes from the dollar store. Yeah, I have to be very sneaky about getting rid of stuff, but this time around I told my kids about other kids who don't have as many toys and that may like to have the ones that they don't play with anymore. It totally helped and now we have quite a lot to donate, which means closets and shelves that can be pretty & functional! Woohoo. It's always great to get rid of the big, giant toys that take up lots of space and hardly get used! It's also been great because we told my kids that one of the deals with this playroom makeover is that they need to keep it clean and they've been doing SO much better at that. I mean, I don't expect perfection, but mainly any effort is good... haha. The way I like to organize is to seriously tear everything apart. I use the entire room and empty every single closet, shelf, etc. I divide the room into different sections (like literally use masking tape to mark off areas) and make groupings of different things-- Books/puzzles, Wood blocks/Legos, Etc. After everything has been sorted (and my kids love to sort stuff) then it's so much easier to know what you want to get rid of. And what you're keeping can be put into bins, shelves, etc. I try to have a separate bin for each thing so it's easier for kids to play with. All our Legos are in one bin, then the wooden train track set has it's own bin, Lincoln Logs have their own and so forth. We have hardly any toys that don't have a grouping. The things my kids use a lot I try to keep on the open shelving and things like the puzzles, that they love, but that I want to supervise with are up higher (as you'll see in the photo). I'll be sharing more organizing details with the final reveal!P.S. We also met with our finish carpenter this week and I can't wait for him to get going on some of the projects I drew up. More coming on that next week....MollieSignature
