How to Pair Kitchen & Dining Lights

Ok, so I have had a few people ask me this question... How do you pair kitchen island lights and dining room lights when they are in the same room. With so many people building and remodeling and open concept layouts being so popular even after quite a few years running, there are a lot of homes that have dining areas that are right next to the kitchen with no real separation. It's nice to have lights that go together, but don't feel too matchy-matchy. Doing matchy-matchy lights feels builder grade and can make a home look less custom. That's why I've got you covered today with a few suggestions! Here are a few ideas for lighting styles that go nicely together. I haven't seen all these finishes in person, so you may want to double check reviews, but I love the way these ones look together and feel like these styles are right on trend and reasonable in terms of budget too! I'll also list a few tips below for things you can look for when selecting your kitchen island and dining room lights. If you guys like this idea I can periodically share new island & dining light pairings like these-- leave me a comment below if you found this helpful! • If you are going with a more "solid" pendant, then you'll want a more airy chandelier or vis-versa (see the first couple pendant options are solid metal, so I went with a more open/airy chandelier to contrast.

  • Go for a similar finish-- Brass is the hardest finish to match in my opinion. There are all kinds of brass tones out there! It's a great idea to look at customer reviews and photos to see as many photos as you can when ordering lighting online.  In terms of black & oil rubbed bronze finishes, most of them are similar enough to work together. I used a mix of oil rubbed bronze and matte black fixtures in my own home and I don't think you can tell the difference once they are hung a lot of the time. I've also been known to take a can of spray paint to a metal light fixture to get a better match when I really want to use a specific light fixture. Most of them are pretty easy to paint.

  • Look for similar lines. You'll notice the first pendants have the dome shape and the coordinating chandelier I found has a dome shape at the top of it as well. The last grouping has a round orb both on the lantern pendants and also at the center of the chandelier. The brass options have a little more squared off lines to them which work well together.
