DIY Project: Witches Broom Halloween Decor

We LOVE a great DIY project here at Design Loves Detail! So today, we are excited to bring you a festive Halloween DIY project with photography help from our friend, Sarah Knight Photography. These adorable witches brooms can be used to adorn your front door, flank your outdoor pillars or simply be placed alongside your favorite side table.

Supplies Needed:

  • One large wooden stick
  • Bundles of twigs (about 8-12" long)
  • Bind wire (or string if wire is not available)
  • Jute
  • Spray glue
  • Black spray paint
  • Black Glitter (or any preferred color)

Start by taking a handful of twigs and binding them together at the top with bind wire. I like mine to be a little bit crazy and not all facing the same direction.  You'll want to keep the top of the twigs in a circular shape so they are easier to wrap. They don't need to be all the same height, as this makes it more authentic looking. Repeat this process until you have 5-6 bundles or until you have desired amount of thickness.

Once you have the desired thickness, take the each bundle and wire it to the large stick in a circular pattern. Make sure that you are wiring it tight so when you pick it up the broom, it doesn't slide off the larger branch. Proceed with next step by wrapping bind wire around all the bunches. This will make the bundles look like a cohesive bunch, as opposed to separate pieces.

Next, use your black spray paint and lightly mist the branches to give them a blackened-age affect. I didn't saturate mine with color because I liked the look of the natural bark showing through. Wait 5-8 minutes for the paint to fully dry.

Repeat the steps above with your spray glue. Before the glue dries, quickly sprinkle with glitter. I left mine lightly powdered but feel free to immerse yours in glitter for a more whimsical approach. The final step is to place twine around where the bind wire is. This will give the broom a finished and authentic look.
Viola! You're finished!
The best part about these charming little numbers is that they are virtually free. All of the supplies can be found at your local Dollar store and the branches from your own backyard.
I hope you enjoyed our first tutorial! Check back tomorrow to see how you can make your own hanging ghost for half the cost of the store bought products.
