Bright Idea: DIY Chrome Lightbulb
To say that we are in love with Typewriter Boneyard's ingenious collection of reproduction bulbs, well it would be a wee bit of an understatement. Let's just say we are obsessed. Their creativity sparked some of our own and we just couldn't help but try our own hand at creating their one of a kind, half chrome bulb. We found some inexpensive glass bulbs at Hobby Lobby that were perfect for our project. The best part about these bulbs is they can sit upright! Genius!SUPPLIES............................................
- Glass bulb (Hobby Lobby $1.99)
- Metallic Spray Paint
- Painters Tape
- Gold Acrylic Paint
- Small Paint Brush
- Start by taping off the top portion of your lightbulb. I found that the easiest way to get a straight line was to take two seperate pieces of tape and carefully pivot around the bulb, meeting in the middle.
- This may take a couple tries to get it straight
- Once you've completely taped off the upper part of bulb, apply a thin layer of metallic spray paint to the exposed portion.
- This will take a minimum of 20 minutes to dry (* to speed up the process, use a blow dryer on a low setting).
- Repeat the processs.
- Once the bulb is completely dry, remove all tape.
- Now is time to use your steady hand at painting. You may be thinking, why arent you taping this portion off? I didnt want to run the risk of pulling off the chrome paint, so I diligently free-handed it.
- Using the gold metallic paint, lightly brush down to the neck of the bulb.
- Repeat until evenly coated. This took me 3 coats.
Your finished product is now ready to adorn your home with all it's uniquness and vintage charm.Hope everyone has a splendid weekend!
