Over the Rainbow: St. Patricks Day DIY

Now that we've shared all of our St Patrick's Inspirations, we thought it only fitting that we show you some of the projects that helped our lunch come to life. First up is the cloud DIY. One of my favorite projects to date! While they may take a day or two to complete, these clouds pack a big punch and will bring so much life to your party.

Supplies:

  • 20-24 latex balloons
  • Tape
  • Cotton batting/pillow filling
  • Spray glue

Paper Mache Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 1 Tbs. Salt
  • Newspaper stripes about 4" wide

Begin by blowing up all the balloons. Make sure that you have a variety of sizes to achieve a life-like cloud.

Its now time to start assembling your clouds. I used double-sided sticky tape to secre my balloons together. You can also just tie the ends together but be sure that they are secure.

Use your creativity to form abstract shapes.

  • Now comes the messy part. Time to paper mache. Mix together equal parts flour to water and add in salt. Mix until you get a creamy consistency.
  • You'll want to make sure that you do this in the kitchen or somewhere that you are able to easily clean up.
  • You can find the "how-to" instructions for paper mache here
  • Completely cover the balloons with mache.
  • Let structure dry completely. Could take up to 24hrs.

  • You should now have something that looks like the above picture.
  • Next, find an open area. Using your spray glue, attached the batting to the mache structure.
  • Use thin layers at first and continue to build upon them.
  • For a more textured look, bunch the batting together and adhere

Finished! You now have whimsical clouds that can be used to accent your party or home decor. We would love to see these clouds used for a baby shower, birthday parties or even smaller versions in a darling nursery or child's room. How would you use them?

Show us your versions of our clouds by tagging your photos on Instagram, at our handle #designlovesdetail.

Stay tuned later today for another quaint DIY project.
