Mother-in-law Suite: Kitchen Tour
Since we don't have any extra bedrooms in our home, we thought a guest suite over the garage would be the perfect idea for out of town visitors. But kitchens can be pricey!! We wanted to make this space beautiful & current, however it was essential to go cost effective if we wanted to pull it off within our budget. I thought I'd share some of the ways we were able to do this. First up are the cabinets which we kept simple! I did an open shelf above the sink that still provides great storage, but is more cost efficient than closed cabinetry. This detail also worked out great for the clipped ceiling on that side. We went with a light stained alder for the shelf. It looks like white oak, but is way cheaper! You can do a white wash on just about any type of wood and can get a look that's still very on trend, but for a fraction of the cost. When ordering cabinetry, just make sure to get samples of the exact wood and stain/paint you're looking at using so you can take the sample and see it in your space and with the other finishes you are using. Also, one thing to remember is that some cabinet companies charge more for stained woods and some charge more for painted woods. Be sure to get a few different bids to see which cabinetry company can give you the best pricing on the materials/finishes you're using. For this kitchen space because we did minimal cabinetry, the cost was just a little over $2k for the cabinets/open shelving. We made use of the lower corner space by doing a lazy susan cabinet, which I'll have to show you guys in IG stories! For the countertops we spent only about $400! It's the laminate version of Calacatta Marble and I have used it in multiple kitchens and think it looks great. You can get a sample here. I like the matte finish best! And to complete this space we used LVP (luxury Vinyl Plank, not to be confused with Lisa VanderPump, the other LVP ;). This LVP is from Hallmark Floors. Have you guys heard of luxury plank vinyl before? It's a newer product and is pretty great stuff. It's cost effective, durable and looks awesome too (as long as you get the right color, haha!). The color I used is the "Winchester Oak" and I love it. I can share more about that on IG stories too if you guys are interested in this, leave me a comment here or on instagram so I'll know you'd like more info! For the appliances, we went with a cost saving package deal (although ours has this electric range instead). Stainless steel appliances for the entire kitchen for under $2000, not bad! The sink/faucet also came in a bundle with the fixture, sink, sink grid and even the soap dispenser! It was super convenient & affordable too.Wall color is Benjamin Moore's Super White, which in my opinion is the truest, white/white out there. Let me know if ya'll have any more questions on this space!Photos taken by Travis J PhotographyCountertopsAppliancesFlooringSinkFaucetCabinet HandlesLight Fixture
