Engagement Sessions: Tips On Using Props Correctly

TGIF!  We send you off for the weekend with some summertime beauties from Alixann Loosle Photography, as well as some tips on using props for your engagement photos. While you don't want to be cliche, you can still bring props to your engagement shoot that can be helpful to both you and your photographer. Using props is a way to show similar interests that you or your groom may have in common. They also act as a natural ice-breaker and can help ease you into photo-taking, as some of us just aren't too keen about getting our picture taken! As you will see below, we've chosen to accent the night with a classic MG, a big floppy hat and stylish sunglasses. They compliment our couple perfectly and show their style. By using the floppy hat we showed Jessica's classic feminine beauty and accented Derec with some aviators for his modern day, James Dean vibe. Simple and sweet up man what an impact.Other props you may thinkg about using include:

  • Large balloon
  • Roe boat
  • Furry friends
  • Food truck
  • Bed
  • Small sign
  • Flowers
  • and more.....

Additional things you may want to take into account when putting together your shoot options:

  • Don't be matchy-matchy. Long gone are the days of wearing matching shirts. Instead try working with complimenting patterns and colors.
  • Don't forget about the shoes! I can not tell you how many times photographers have mentioned that they dread when guys show up in sneakers or old, dirty loafers.
  • Don't bring more than 2-3 props. After all, you should be the highlight of the photos and your props a helpful afterthought
